INTERNATIONAL MEN'S DAY (NOVEMBER 19)
International Men's Day is celebrated annually on November 19 to recognize the vital roles men play in society, families, and communities worldwide. It's a day to honor men's socioeconomic, cultural, and political achievements, while also raising awareness about men's health and encouraging men to be positive role models.
The concept of International Men's Day was first introduced in 1992 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a scholar from Trinidad and Tobago, who aimed to create a day that would appreciate men's accomplishments and talents, while addressing important issues like gender-based violence, male health, and the value of positive male role models.
The Six Pillars of International Men's Day
The day is guided by six core objectives:
- Promoting Positive Male Role Models: recognizing everyday men who live decent, honest lives
- Celebrating Men's Contributions: acknowledging men's positive impact on society, community, family, marriage, child care, and the environment
- Focusing on Men's Health and Wellbeing: addressing social, emotional, physical, and spiritual health
- Highlighting Discrimination Against Men: identifying areas where men face bias in social services, attitudes, and law
- Improving Gender Relations: promoting gender equality and harmony
- Creating a Better World: striving for a safer, more supportive environment where people can grow and reach their full potential.
Yearly Themes
Each year, International Men's Day adopts a secondary theme to focus on specific issues. Previous themes have included "Giving Boys the Best Possible Start in Life" (2011), "Helping Men and Boys Live Longer, Happier and Healthier Lives" (2012), and "Stop Male Suicide" (2016).
In summary, International Men's Day is a significant occasion to appreciate the value and contributions of men, while also addressing the challenges they face. By promoting positive male role models and highlighting important issues, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive society for all.
From Joge Blogs, we wish all responsible men who have given themselves as role models, mentors, and ladder for the younger generation to learn from.
As you all struggle to make ends meet, and be there for your families and the societies at large, we encourage you to look after yourselves, and be mindful of your mental health. Make a time out for vacation, have adequate rest, eat healthy, and visit your clinics for check-ups regularly.
We wish you all a blessed life!
Congratulations and happy International Men's Day!
