A TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDARY ONYEKA ONWENU: THE ELEGANT VOICE OF A NATION.
Death, the inevitable end. A call that every living soul shall answer whether we like it or not. A table that had been preset for us all to dine and wine some day. It will come when it will, no one shall get out of here alive. You had better believe it now!
I woke up to the music of the iconic Onyeka Onwenu's "One Love" this morning with her sonorous voice spiced with blending rhythms piercing through my spines, and reminding me of how important it is to love one another. Love is the binding rope that can hold the world together, but when there's no love, everything will be in disarray just as Chinua Achebe had it in "Things Fall Apart, the central cannot hold". Death has struck, things have again fallen apart in Nigerian entertainment industry, and the central cannot hold any longer.
In the annals of Nigerian history, few names resonate as profoundly as that of Onyeka Onwenu. A true cultural icon, Onyeka’s voice was not just a source of musical delight but a powerful tool for social change. Her recent passing has left a void that is deeply felt across the nation and beyond.
Born on May 17, 1952, Onyeka Onwenu emerged as a beacon of grace and resilience, embodying the spirit of a generation that sought to define its identity through art, music, and activism. From her early days, it was clear that Onyeka was destined for greatness. She was a woman of many firsts—a trailblazer who broke barriers and set new standards in an industry dominated by men.
Her music, a soulful blend of traditional African sounds and contemporary influences, spoke to the heart of the Nigerian experience. Songs like "One Love," "Iyogogo," and "You and I" became anthems of unity and love, transcending the boundaries of ethnicity and language. Onyeka's voice, with its rich, velvety timbre, had a unique ability to convey deep emotion, making her music a solace for the weary and a rallying cry for those seeking change.
But Onyeka was more than just a singer. She was a storyteller, an activist, and a patriot. Her work in documentaries and television brought to light the struggles and triumphs of everyday Nigerians, highlighting issues such as corruption, women's rights, and social justice. Onyeka's commitment to these causes earned her the title "The Elegant Stallion," a testament to her strength, elegance, and unwavering dedication to her country.
In her later years, Onyeka Onwenu transitioned into politics and public service, continuing her lifelong mission of advocating for the underprivileged and marginalized. Her influence extended beyond entertainment, as she became a symbol of integrity and compassion in the political arena.
As we mourn the loss of Onyeka Onwenu, we also celebrate a life lived in full service to her people. Her legacy is one of love, hope, and unwavering belief in the power of music to heal and unite. Onyeka's songs will continue to resonate, reminding us of the beauty of our shared humanity and the importance of standing up for what is right.
Rest in peace, Onyeka Onwenu. A Paragon of beauty, and an epitome of good conduct slumber and died at 72. Your voice may be silent, but its echoes will reverberate through the corridors of time, inspiring generations to come.
Rest In Peace our dear freedom fighter!
